Superintendent Update
Timarron Country Club
Course Opening Tuesday February 23rd
The weather over the last 10 days has had a huge impact on Texas, as well as your golf course. We have had weather that has not been seen in over 70 years here in DFW. We reached a low of -2 degrees (second coldest of all time), had 5 inches of snow, and when its all said and done the putting greens will have been covered with tarps for 12 consecutive days. On top of that we added a thick layer of mulch over of the greens tarps to help insulate and protect your putting greens.
Initially we believed we could have 9 holes open for members to play on Sunday, February 21st. However, the amount of snow that we received is delaying our cleanup as well as another freeze is now forecasted for Sunday night. The best decision for the long-term health of the putting greens to keep them covered through Sunday.
The cleanup process of the mulch will be labor intensive and time consuming. Thankfully, all departments at Timarron CC will be supplying employees to help in the clean up of the golf course. Here is our clean up schedule;
• Sunday February 21st- Course Closed- Remove mulch from putting greens.
• Monday February 22nd- Course Closed- Finish removing mulch and remove greens tarps.
• Tuesday February 23rd- Course open for member play. Expect the course to be cart path only for several days.
Going forward, there is a lot of unknowns. Bermudagrass loves hot and sunny weather, not this record cold weather that we received, and putting greens are always the most susceptible to damage. We will be very conservative with how we manage our putting greens this spring. The greens have just endured some severe stress and our priority will be to get them healthy again. We will be venting, fertilizing more, and raising the height of cut of our greens mowers over the next few weeks and months to improve the natural health of the turfgrass.
We will continue to communicate and give updates about how the turf is progressing to our members on a timely basis. Thank you for your continued support,
Aaron Clary
